A Korean company has secured a bridgehead for the commercialization of level 4 autonomous vehicle communication (V2V). It is expected to be an inflection point for upgrading autonomous driving and enhancing vehicle safety.
ACEWORKS announced on the 29th that it has completed the development of "Korean-style V2V autonomous vehicle" with iNabi Systems, Lotte Innovate, Case Lab, and IT Telecom.
Hyundai Motor's electric sedan Ioniq 6 is equipped with V2V technology that enables real-time communication with other vehicles by utilizing telematics for the vehicle. It has implemented level 4 autonomous driving that does not require driver intervention.
The development of Korean V2V autonomous vehicles is a national project, with a total of 9 billion won spent.
iNavi Systems was in charge of developing high-precision maps for V2V autonomous vehicles. IT Telecom developed technology related to vehicle communication terminals, and Case Lab developed software. Lotte Innovate was in charge of developing solutions that encompass communication and software.
The five companies made it possible to recognize dangerous situations on general roads and allow free driving by sharing information on traffic and road conditions and objects and people between vehicles. In particular, the optimal autonomous driving technology was completed by using only communication technology even in sections where road infrastructure was not properly established.

In July 2023, the Korea Automobile Research Institute selected five companies, Aceworks, Ainab Systems, Lotte Innovate, Case Lab, and IT Telecom, and completed vehicle development for two years.
The Korea Automobile Research Institute and five companies plan to start demonstration of V2V autonomous vehicles with the aim of commercialization in 2027.
Lee Jae-kwan, head of the Korea Automobile Research Institute's Autonomous Driving Research Institute, said, "It is particularly meaningful that we have secured technology for improving driving safety and early commercialization of level 4 autonomous driving."
Starting with securing temporary permission to operate V2V self-driving cars in the new year, the Korea Automobile Research Institute plans to conduct demonstration on the nation's largest self-driving testbed established in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, in 2026.
Based on the empirical results, the Korea Automobile Research Institute aims to commercialize level 4 V2V autonomous vehicles in 2027.
