ACEWORKS Presents Technology Vision for the ‘Safety-First’ AI Era

Future mobility control and verification specialist ACEWORKS held a company-wide meeting at its headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 6th to share its technology vision for the AI era, with a primary focus on safety.
Lim Jong-geun, leader of the Platform Team in the ES (Embedded Systems) Division, took the stage as the presenter. Under the theme "Redefining Automotive HILS (Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation) in the AI Era," Lim explained a new paradigm for safety.
He emphasized the necessity of separating the "AI Brain," which operates probabilistically and may contain errors, from the "Safety Monitor" that physically controls it. He argued that as AI becomes more sophisticated, the verification of the underlying controllers must, paradoxically, become even more stringent. As a solution, Lim proposed evolving beyond conventional HILS verification toward an AI-based HILS method that identifies system limits by injecting tens of thousands of unexpected scenarios.
The importance of new safety analysis techniques following the advancement of autonomous driving technology was also highlighted. Lim explained that it is necessary to introduce STPA (System-Theoretic Process Analysis), which analyzes complex interactions between systems rather than relying solely on traditional component-failure analysis. This shift aims to establish a "Continuous Safety Assurance" framework tailored for the OTA (Over-the-Air) update era, moving away from one-time certifications. This approach is expected to enable real-time monitoring of residual risks resulting from software changes.
